Crematogaster scutellaris – The "Heart" Ant with a Fire Temper
Established and dynamic colony (Queen swarming 2024 + 80 to 100 workers + significant brood).
🐜 A unique personality in the world of myrmecology
The Crematogaster scutellaris never goes unnoticed. With its brick-red head and black, heart-shaped abdomen, which it proudly raises above its head when alarmed, it puts on a constant display. It is an extremely reactive species, an excellent hunter, and its population literally explodes once it reaches a hundred workers.
My opinion: This is the species I recommend to those who find other ants too sleepy! 'Scutellaris' is always on the move. At this stage of 80-100 workers, they begin to create impressive recruitment trails. My advice: they are escape artists, so make sure you have effective anti-escape measures, as they test every millimeter of their foraging area!
📋 Maintenance sheet (Action & Responsiveness)
- Difficulty: Easy (Very robust).
- Special feature: Articulated abdomen in the shape of a heart (unique defensive posture).
- Development: Very rapid. A colony can reach several thousand individuals in a short time.
- Humidity: Very low ( 10-20% ). It is a wood-dwelling species that loves dry nests, provided there is a waterer available.
🛠️ Detailed breeding parameters
- Sizes: Queen (7-9 mm) | Workers (4-5 mm). No major caste, but exceptional group coordination.
- Temperature: It loves the heat! Keep it between 22°C and 28°C for explosive growth.
- Diet: Omnivorous with a sweet tooth. They never refuse an insect or a drop of honeydew.
- Diapause: Recommended for the queen's longevity. 3 months (November to March) between 12°C and 16°C .
📦 Why choose this colony from Fourmitures?
- Colony Launched: You are not starting from scratch. With 80-100 workers, you already have a structured colony ready to conquer its first nest.
- Local strain: Queen from a swarm in France (2024), perfectly adapted to our conditions.
